Despite the fact that the town had previously decided to cut their financial sponsorship and some in-kind services for the annual Christmas parade, New Glasgow Mayor Barrie MacMillan says that the parade will happen this year.
He said that the town is currently working with the New Glasgow Regional Police Service and parade organizers to make sure the event happens.
"I find it sad that some people would make Santa Claus an election issue," MacMillan said.
The town council will review their decision to cut the sponsorship and in-kind services during a council meeting tonight.
New Glasgow Christmas Parade Chair Paula Munro-Fraser had sent out an email to some of the usual parade participants saying that because of budget cuts from the town that the parade wouldn't happen this year.?
"The community organizes the parade with significant support and resources?provided by the Town of New Glasgow," Munro-Fraser said today. "We were greatly concerned about the budget cuts and our ability to put on the parade."
Now that the town council is discussing it at tonight's meeting, she said she is hopeful they can all work together to keep the parade going.
"We are also hoping the community will come forward to continue to help with sponsorship and the committee has had some feedback that indicates that support will be forthcoming."
She said they will have a final decision by the end of the week on whether the parade will go on or not.
She said she had learned in the spring that the town had cut funding and in-kind services such as policing for the parade in an effort to save money.
