Let's Get Reacquainted, Mr. Boomer ? Boomer Immersion

By Gina Pagliaro

Our team collaborated with AdAge last month to discuss methods for understanding the male baby boomer (Dudes to Dads: U.S. Men?s Attitudes Toward Life, Family, Work, available for $249.00 from Ad Age Insights). And, although we approach mature markets from a behavioral perspective ? monitoring the seasons of human life ? we had to face a realization. Boomer males fly under the marketing research radar unlike the well-explored and developed persona of the female boomer. Newsflash, our male protagonist no longer maintains the outlook of the heavy-handed, breadwinner from the 1950s.

Who is the boomer male today?

Who is the boomer male today? Pictured: Jon Hamm as Don Draper in AMC?s Mad Men. (Image ? American Movie Classics Company LLC)

This clearly isn?t a novel statement. We all know that women and men are taking on different societal roles. But as marketers, are we really considering these evolving characteristics, due to the changing zeitgeist, in our communications efforts?

Zeitgeist, ?the spirit of age,? is the intellectual and cultural feel of an era. Experiences of people within a culture define the zeitgeist, which in turn shapes a particular worldview of the entire culture. As an industry, much of our cultural research is around women. During the ?Mad Men? boom of advertising, women were targets for household/family related purchases. But as their business roles grew so did our attention. Focus is (and has been) on these super-human females. Ok, so I?m biased as a professional female, but what about the progress of the evolving male? Just as we reevaluated the female in our changing world, we need to do the same for male cultural influences.

Baby Boomer Men and Senior Caregiving

We?re now seeing boomer men more engaged and hands-on with family matters than ever before. Male caregiving for adults has more than doubled, from 19 to 40 percent in the last 15 years according to the Alzheimer?s Association. We attribute this drastic shift to the decreasing size of the average family, the greater geographic divide of family members, and higher life expectancies. If we continue to focus on the female audience, we?re sure to overlook the male problem-solver and dual-purchaser.

Expanding Male Household Roles and Responsibilities

Boomer men are not only caregiving for their parents and wives, but also for their children. This change in household duties also resulted from the ?mancession.? Beginning in 2007, unemployment rates began to disproportionately hurt men over women. Let?s consider the effects of our economy; white-collared males with a higher salary were quickly replaced with workers who accepted lower pay, like our youth and the realistic working female. It made financial sense for fathers to stay home or share housing responsibilities with their wives.

Male Boomer Lifestyle Trends: Vibrant Healthy Living

And like their female counterpart, boomer males also focus on caring for themselves. It?s, ?how can I live better,? and services that empathize with their desire to be active, vibrant and connected that give validation to their needs without calling out the silvers and grays. Trends for keeping youthful, such as hormone replacement therapy, are popular among both females and males. Despite its unconventionality, anti-aging male services tripled in recent years, resulting in $400 million industry.

Consider taking an androgynous approach, meeting the developmental needs of the male boomer, while continuing outreach to the female boomer, to maximize your audience. Traditional roles are going out the window and boomer characteristics will overlap more frequently as our culture evolves.

When in doubt, look to the zeitgeist.

Britain: Syria's top diplomat in London resigns

Syria's top diplomat in London resigned Monday in protest against the "violent and oppressive" acts of President Bashar al-Assad's regime, the British Foreign Office said.

The Foreign Office said in a statement that charge d'affaires Khaled al-Ayoubi had informed it on Monday that he had "left his post", describing it as a blow to the Syrian government.

"Mr. al-Ayoubi has told us that he is no longer willing to represent a regime that has committed such violent and oppressive acts against its own people, and is therefore unable to continue in his position," it said.

Britain expelled the previous Syrian charge d'affaires, Ghassan Dalla, and two other diplomats in May. Syria had earlier withdrawn its ambassador from London.

"Mr. al-Ayoubi was the most senior Syrian diplomat serving in London. His departure is another blow to the Assad regime," the Foreign Office said.

"It illustrates the revulsion and despair the regime's actions are provoking amongst Syrians from all walks of life, inside the country and abroad."

It added: "We urge others around Bashar al-Assad to follow Mr. al-Ayoubi's example; to disassociate themselves from the crimes being committed against the Syrian people and to support a peaceful and free future for Syria."

The move comes after a series of defections by senior Syrian officials in recent weeks, including diplomats in several countries and top army officers.

Florida man who lost hand charged with feeding gator

A Florida airboat captain whose hand was bitten off by a 9-foot alligator faces charges of feeding of the animal.

Collier County Jail records show 63-year-old Wallace Weatherholt was charged Friday with unlawful feeding of an alligator and later posted $1,000 bond. His next court date is Aug. 22.

The arrest was first reported by the Fort Myers News-Press.

Weatherholt was attacked on June 12th as he was giving an Indiana family a tour of the Everglades. The family said Weatherholt hung a fish over the side of the boat and had his hand at the water's surface when the alligator attacked.

Wildlife officers tracked and euthanized the gator. Weatherholt's hand was found but could not be reattached.

A criminal investigation followed. Feeding alligators is a second-degree misdemeanor.

2012 London Olympics: Astrology of a global spectacle - blog*spot

While this blog is not updating at present, I shall be posting occasional pieces of specialist interest.

The 2012 Olympics commenced at ? ah, we have a problem. HM The Queen declared the Games open at 12:18am on July 28, 2012. But the Olympic Cauldron was lit at 12:35am. The starting moment is crucial to an accurate horoscope; fortunately, both times produce very similar charts in this particular instance. So, let?s go with 12:18am given it's the time of the Queen's command. I have used the Equal House system.

This gives us a chart ruler of Venus with Taurus rising; and Venus itself is in the 1st?house ? very well aspected, trining Mars and Saturn, underscoring an essential harmony to the intense rivalry at the heart of the Games. Venus also rules the Olympics? 5th House in which Mars is located, and H6 via Saturn, under Libra.

Intense physical energy, as you'd expect

This is a wildly stimulating and dynamic chart as might be expected of a global sports event involving over 200 nations: the cardinal t-square (Mars-Uranus H5-11opposition, square Pluto H8) locates physical dynamism in the theatrical house (H5) ? plainly a part-description of Danny Boyle?s spectacular celebration of British history and culture. H5 is also the sector we associate with competitive sport, amusements and children: it was interesting that Boyle made kids central to his show, with Harry Potter author JK Rowling introducing us to famous villains of children?s literature.

Uranus is strongly placed in H11 ? the house it is associated with through Aquarius ? pointing to the idealistic, innovative and impersonal nature of the competition: in Aries (ruled by Mars), this idealism has an intense physical expression, magnified by Mars? opposition in Libra: what might seem a physically dangerous aspect is contained by high ideals and a commitment to right relations so it is likely that Mars-Uranus here encapsulates the requisite and intense athleticism and international competition.

Other astrologers have perceived real terrorist threat in the Mars/Uranus opposition.

Other astrologers have also made much of Pluto, now strongly placed in its traditional H8, which is at the apex of the Mars-Uranus t-square: a reminder that immense financial power dictates the Games beyond sports considerations. Pluto also plays a part in at least two yods: (1) Sun/Mercury sextile Jupiter H1 inconjunct Pluto and (2) Pluto sextile Neptune/Chiron H10 inconjunct Sun/Mercury. The yod is a complex and awkward aspect, to be expected in a chart for such a complicated event as the Olympics.

Jupiter possibly takes the sting out of the Mars/Uranus opposition: sextile Uranus, trine Mars, Jupiter in Gemini bestows an expansive, upbeat and positive energy from the UK's house of its people, H1. No matter what financial problems indicated below, these Games are likely to be hugely profitable to the UK.

Financial row and raised injuries risk possible

The first yod, with Pluto conjunct accident-prone, practical fixed star Facies, describes the courageous physical manifestation of energy but warns of injuries ? perhaps many more than usual. That's if we are to take note of Facies.

Because Pluto ? associated with big money and business - is at the wrong end of the yod, there could be problems over financing of the event or some other cash-related headache or scandal: Pluto square Uranus could hint at the expensive pioneering features of this Olympics.

The second yod possibly involves the media (Mercury strong in its traditional H3 but retrograde) in some kind of disruption or controversy linked to finance. Mercury is also opposed by Pars Fortuna in H9 Aquarius ? this repeats the possibility of a media role in challenging some financial aspect of the Games. An alternative possibility is that Mercury (planet of short journeys) here warns of travel disruption (currently as I write not in evidence). With Sun so close to Mercury this could impact unfavourably on the national identity.

Also worth noting is Sun/Mercury conjunct unpleasant fixed star Praesaepe ? associated with, among other things, serious accidents. So the theme of injuries through accidents is repeated. My jury is still out on the reliability of fixed stars, incidentally.

Political differences over Olympics and self-image

Neptune in Pisces ? here representing national aspiration, the nation?s spirituality or higher values and imaginative construct of nationhood ? is located in H10, the house of public status in the eyes of the world: the very human face of Boyle?s show, with its emphasis on the NHS and music, fits perfectly this position.

Whether the presented national image is true or accords universally with all perspectives is another matter (Neptune inconjunct Mercury): again, critical voices may be expected, particularly in the media.

Saturn in the 6th?square MC but trine Venus describes the administrative rigour applied to the event and its very testing nature. Three trines between Sun/Mercury both to Uranus, Moon (on descendant) and North Node (in H7) however suggest a successful presentation overall.

UK Chart: Medals? A dangerous time?

In the UK?s 1801 ?birth? chart (not shown as a graphic here), Neptune is transiting the 5th?House ? not a position I would associate with an outstanding number of medals wins for the UK ? perhaps water-related sports are best favoured. Neptune is also conjunct birth Pluto opposite Saturn H11: the UK may beat itself up a bit over the Olympics and could feel its own limitations amid other nations.

The Olympics could also become something of a political hot potato as Uranus (right-wing) is inconjunct Neptune (left-wing): perhaps there is discord over what it means to be British along party political lines. The international dimension to this row is suggested by transiting Uranus on Descendant (other nations).

Tr Mars conjunct troublesome fixed star Algorab repeats the warning of accidents/injuries ? the massed ranks of soldiers assigned to guard the Games is very wise in what could be a highly dangerous phase.

Nonetheless, tr Sun/Mercury in H10 promises high prestige for the UK.

10 gadgets to turn your dorm room into geek heaven

20 hrs.

When I was in college, I worked part time to afford an apartment because the on-campus dorms were expensive and generally terrible. Still, I regret missing out on that experience. Maybe it would be different if I could have decked out my dorm room the following awesome gadgets.

Bacon alarm clock
Have to be up early at 1 p.m. for an exam? You can rely on the BAKON Alarm Clock. This DIY project requires an old baking oven, a timer, high-temp car paint, a pig keychain from Party City, spare bottle caps, 10-gauge solid wire, some googly eyes, a screwdriver and a Dremel tool. Once built, it will wake you up with the sizzling sound, delightful smell and delicious taste of bacon. Instructables via That's Nerdalicious

Marshall guitar amp fridge
It may look like a Marshall guitar amp, but this is actually a 4.4-cubic-foot refrigerator/freezer that you can fill with beer and pizza rolls. It even features an homage to Spinal Tap, in the form of knobs that actually go to 11. Most dorm parties only?go to 10, so that means you'll be partying one harder. $300 ??Marshall Fridge via That's Nerdalicious

Brew Cave walk-in beer cooler
So the guitar amp fridge was cool and all, but the dorm fridge of your dreams would undoubtedly be the Brew Cave walk-in beer cooler. In addition to offering four inches of insulation, the cooler also boasts shelf space for up to 30 cases of beer, room for four kegs, and a built-in tap. Of course, I think this cooler has more square footage inside then the dorm rooms at my old college. $6,349 ??Kegworks via That's Nerdalicious

Smart trash?can
While I doubt that many students these days will be using a typewriter in their quest to stretch two pages of text into the required five, this smart trash?can will still do a great job of catching your garbage on the fly. It uses Microsoft Kinect, a motorized wheelbase and a heck of a lot of coding to track your flying wads of paper and ensure you hit that three-pointer every time.

BRAD automated dorm
University of California at Berkeley freshman Derek Low spent three months creating what he calls ?the most ridiculously automated dorm room in the school ever.? Dubbed ?BRAD? (Berkeley Ridiculously Automated Dorm), the system employs motion sensors to detect when someone enters or exits the room, and it has the ability to control the lights, window shades, and music via voice controls and mobile apps. An emergency red ?party mode? button was also provided, which closes the shades, turns on dance music and replaces the overhead lights with flashing neon lighting and strobes. CubicleBot

?More craziness fron Nerd Approved:

Giant Legend of Zelda wall mural
The giant Legend of Zelda wall mural is an opportunity to decorate your dorm room with something nerdy and elaborate but surprisingly inexpensive. It's an 8-foot-by-3-foot fabric map of the entire Zelda overworld that will only set you back around $40. Plus, when it's laundry day, you can take it off the wall and?wear it like a toga. That's what I call versatility. Etsy via Nerd Approved

Lightsaber chopsticks
You may be a freshman eating Ramen, but at least you're doing it like a Padawan with these fancy light-up lightsaber chopsticks. Indeed, the blades actually glow thanks to LEDs that can be activated with the push of a button. $17.99 ??BigBadToyStore via That's Nerdalicious

Podtime tubes
Privacy and sleep are two things that are hard to come by while living in a dorm. These Podtime beds could provide a solution to both of those problems. With a shell made of "practically indestructible" polycarbonate, Podtime tubes can be stacked on top of one another like bunk beds so they won't take up much space. They can also be customized with entertainment systems, LED lighting, storage and an alarm. $2,158 and up ??Firebox and Podtime

An electronic beer pong table
For many college students, a good beer pong table is a crucial piece of furniture. If you have the resources and the ambition, you could make something similar to the version featured in this video from Auburn University. While there doesn't appear to be any details on the building of it, some engineering student has clearly put his new found skills to their ultimate use. Break?(video)

Iron Throne
Every dorm room needs a good chair, but if I had all the money in the world (as opposed to wondering how I would afford breakfast from the Dollar Menu), I would eschew comfort in favor of this "Game of Thrones" Iron Throne replica. This official life-size?seat is no joke either. It stands at 7 feet tall and 5 feet wide and weighs 350 pounds. It also costs a whopping $30,000???HBO via Nerd Approved

The best prepaid smartphones

Today, you can get a prepaid smartphone that easily competes with contract phones ? even a prepaid iPhone. You?ll pay more up front, but entry-level monthly plans are much less.

For instance, you?ll pay $649.99 for a 16GB iPhone 4S and $30 per month for 2.5 GB data, unlimited texting and 300 minutes on Virgin Mobile. So for the first year, your out-of-pocket would be $1,010 before taxes and fees. On AT&T, you?ll pay $199.99 for the 16GB iPhone 4S and $89.99 per month for 3GB of data, unlimited texting and 450 minutes. So your expenses the first year would be $1,279.87 before taxes and fees and you?d still have another year on your contract.

Before you get too excited, keep in mind that the latest and hottest new phones are still available to contract customers months before they trickle down to prepaid plans ? and to the carriers that mainly offer them. And, like contract phones, prepaid phones are usually locked to the carrier you purchase them from. But there's no denying the savings.

So if you're going the prepaid route, these are our picks for the best prepaid smartphones:

iPhone 4S 16GB on Cricket ($499.99) and Virgin Mobile ($649.99)
The iPhone 4S as a prepaid phone? That?s an automatic winner. You?ve got the unbeatable app store, great 8MP camera and a huge ecosystem of accessories and cases. And for some, the smaller 3.5-inch screen is a bonus for portability.

Other key specs include a 800MHz dual core processor and a 1430mAh battery rated at up to 8 hours talk time or up to 8.3 days standby. Like other iPhone 4S models, these run on the carriers? 3G networks.

HTC One V on Virgin Mobile ($199.99)
While the One V doesn?t have the dual-core processing power or 4G speeds of its big brothers, the HTC One X (AT&T) and One S (T-Mobile), it does share the same imaging processor and has a 5MP camera with a f/2.0 28mm wide-angle lens. That means fantastic low-light photos, instant camera start up, imperceptible shutter lag, continuous shooting and the ability to take photos while shooting HD video.

The One V runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and has a 3.7-inch display, a 1Ghz processor, 4GB onboard memory and a microSD card slot and a 1500mAh battery rated at up to 7.2 hours talk time or up to 10.5 days standby.

Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G on T-Mobile ($299.99)
The Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G earned our "Highly Recommended" rating when we reviewed it in April. It runs on T-Mobile?s 4G network, has a speedy 1.5GHz dual core processor, a 3.97-inch AMOLED display and runs Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread (rather than Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which most new phones run).

It packs a very good 5MP camera, 4GB microSD card and a 1750mAh battery rated at up to 7 hours talk time or up to 9.5 days standby.

AT&T and Verizon both also offer Android phones and unlimited text, voice and 3G data, but they don't provide the value found on T-Mobile and some of the prepaid carriers. For instance, Verizon has one 3G Android phone and the carrier charges $80 per month. AT&T has a wider selection and a $50 plan, but the phones are lackluster. And if you're an existing AT&T or Verizon customer, there are no pre-paid family options.

Door clues can pinpoint home's construction date | Real Estate ...

Top 5 details to look for

Top 5 details to look for

Arrol Gellner
Inman News?

There's a little parlor trick I like to pull when I'm doing consulting at people's homes. I ask them what year their home was built, and before they can answer, I quickly stop them with a raised hand.

"No, don't tell me," I insist. After a brief show of Kreskin-like concentration, I give them my guess with a flourish. I'm almost always within five years of the correct year of construction. Often, I'm within two years, and occasionally I'm right on the money. The look of astonishment on the homeowners' faces is always gratifying.

Like most parlor tricks, this one is easy to explain. It relies on a simple and rather prosaic yardstick found in every house: its doors. Unless the place has gone through one of those ghastly home-improvement-emporium "renovations" -- in which case the owners would not bother to call me in the first place -- the doors are usually original to the house, offering a clear indication of when the place was built.

Right off the bat, a quick glance at the door panel arrangement will usually get you within 10 or 15 years of the construction date. For example, very tall doors with pairs of narrow vertical panels are a dead giveaway to Victorian-era work, yielding a construction date between 1850 and 1900. This broad range can be further narrowed using another test: The more ornate the doors, the later in the 19th century the house was built.

Doors with four stacked horizontal panels, on the other hand, indicate a Craftsman-era pedigree -- roughly 1900 to 1925. Those with a single large recessed panel indicate a vintage between 1925 and 1950 or so. Doors with no panels at all -- so-called flush or slab doors -- point to a modernist-era construction date between the early 1950s and 1980. Molded hardboard doors imitating various traditional panel arrangements point to a construction date between 1985 and the present.

The type of lockset that's installed in a door furnishes other clues. If the door has a mortise lock (evidenced by a tall, skinny plate in the door edge and doorknobs fastened to a square shaft by setscrews), the house almost certainly predates 1925, although such locks were still used in basement rooms and garages for another decade or two.

On the other hand, doors with just a small rectangular latch plate in the door edge invariably mean the house postdates 1920 -- the year when Walter Schlage invented the easier-to-install cylindrical lockset that quickly drove the mortise lock off the market.

Doorknobs, too, have a tale to tell. Mortise locksets with ornate metal or glass knobs suggest late 19th-century construction dates, while those with plain white, brown or black glass knobs are more typical of early 20th-century houses. Cylindrical locksets with knobs resembling giant glass jewels easily peg a home's construction date between 1920 and 1935.

Even hinges can provide clues. Ornate hinges with spiky ornamental pins typify Victorian-era houses. Hinges with plain leaves and ball-tipped pins hark from the Craftsman era, but remained popular through the Depression. Hinges with plain, flat-tipped pins indicate houses postdating World War II, while those with round-cornered plates are a hallmark of mass-produced prehung doors, putting a home's construction date after 1970.

Buying Websites Explode With Real Estate Investors Showing How ...

No matter how you stack it, there are a variety of ways to make money online (and no, we?re not talking about those ?make money online? scams that promise mega millions overnight). Of course, a majority of online entrepreneurs have a website that allows them to generate income in whatever niche or market they decide. It?s practically essential to have a website if you want to earn any serious money online or offline now days.
    Websites = Virtual Real Estate
Website investing is much like real estate in the virtual world. They act similar to rental property by creating passive income each month, all without much maintenance or upkeep involved (that?s after the initial work to get things going, of course). This is one of the major reasons behind the explosive growth in revenue generated online over the past few years.
With the user base of the internet growing more and more each day, more people are building a passive monthly income by owning and operating a fleet of websites. Like real estate investors rather than build websites on their own, many savvy investors are in the business of buying websites that are already established.
Think about it ? you could invest your time into a few websites completely from scratch, waiting days, months or years for that first bit of revenue to flow through or would you rather buy websites that are already producing income, allowing you to start making money from day one!
    How to Buy Websites
Unfortunately, it isn?t as easy as taking a wad of cash and throwing it at any revenue generating website ? there are a few special techniques involved (although not difficult) that you?ll need to learn before jumping into the website buying game. Just like any business investor, you need to be able to have an eye for potential, seeking sites you can purchase at bargain prices that require minimal tweaking for maximum earning potential.
Finding websites to purchase is a fairly simple process. Various auction sites (such as Flippa.com or eBay) are the normal places to find deals on websites that perform. In fact, the real bargains are never exposed to the general public. The best way to get your hands on top performing websites for a steal is to be on the inside and learn the insider secrets.
You don?t go to the local real estate broker to find houses that are selling for half price.. The reason is the broker would have already bought it.
    Buying Websites for Long-Term Wealth
It?s no secret that buying websites can create long-term wealth. All it takes is someone with an eye for opportunity and a passion for earning some serious cash online and who can follow simple instructions. Are you next? 18words add

Mild Tebowmania as Jets open camp

CORTLAND, N.Y. (AP) ? Fans chanting his name and carrying banners proclaiming his greatness ? or otherwise ? will have to wait a couple of days. As the New York Jets reported to training camp Thursday, Tim Tebow simply was another player.

Well, almost. Tebow had to chuckle when asked about the legions of media that follow his every move, even on a rainy afternoon when nothing more is required of him or his teammates than showing up.

With perhaps 50 reporters, cameramen and broadcasters on hand at SUNY Cortland, it didn't look much different than one of Tebow's postgame gatherings in Denver last season. Surely, the focus is not the same: Tebow now is a backup to Mark Sanchez, as everyone from the head coach to the offensive coordinator to Sanchez himself made clear for the, oh, millionth time.

Still, it was Tebow who drew the most attention, including a comical episode in which the TV folks had to scramble for position when Tebow lined up elsewhere from where they anticipated.

"I really try not to let this affect my life," a laughing Tebow said about the media crush that is likely to continue through the rest of the summer. "I try to live my life and not worry about what I can't control."

Tebow then glanced all around him and smiled.

"This is like the first day of college."

Ah, but this central New York university hasn't seen anything like what could develop over the next few weeks, beginning Saturday when the Jets hold their first public practice. Every move by both quarterbacks will be scrutinized not only by local and national journalists ? one Jets employee asked Thursday when TSPN (all Tebow all the time) goes on the air ? but by the folks who buy tickets. Fans are certain to take up Tebow's cause, or Sanchez's.

Tebow says he can ignore all that and concentrate on "getting better every day."

"Playing football doesn't get old," the third-year quarterback who saved Denver's 2011 season said.

How much football he will play is the big question. It figures that during the preseason, when starting QBs don't get on the field for much game action, Tebow will be the Jets' main man.

But in practices, and certainly when the regular season kicks off against Buffalo on Sept. 9, the Jets expect him to be part-time Tebow behind three-year starter Sanchez.

"We clearly have a starting quarterback and that's Mark," coach Rex Ryan reiterated. "I know the history of the league and the saying, 'When you have two quarterbacks, you don't have any.' Tell that to the San Francisco 49ers with Montana and Young.

"This is a different situation, with a clear-cut starting QB."

Clear cut to some, including those in power with the Jets ? for now. Not so clear to the impassioned fans of the ultra-popular Tebow.

Not that Tebow doesn't have a role in the offense being installed by former Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano. At Miami, Sparano revitalized the wildcat, and he believes Tebow fits the QB role in that formation perfectly.

Plus, the Jets are toying with using Tebow as the protector on punts because of his size and athletic skills.

"I have a very good idea how I want to use him, and the way I want to go about it in the next several weeks," Sparano said. "We'll throw the offensive book at him and see what sitcks. Things that look good we'll continue. Things that don't look good we'll throw out."

What no one wants ? not even Sanchez ? is to have Tebow cede the starting quarterback job without a fight. Ryan can't imagine that happening.

"You never want a player who doesn't want to be the guy," Ryan said when asked if he is eager for Tebow to push Sanchez for the No. 1 spot. "Competition is great for everybody.

"Tim is going to play here, there's no question about it."

Actually, Rex, there are plenty of questions about it, and the Jets will be answering them throughout a preseason that already borders on the absurd. Queries such as:

    ?How much will Tebow play?

    ?At what junctures?

    ?At what positions?

?In the regular offense, or only in the wildcat?

For his part, a bulked-up Sanchez wisely is concentrating on his responsibilities. He gained 12 pounds of muscle mass and now goes at 230 pounds. He is eager to be the team leader. He was one of the first players to enter the dormitories on Thursday, and the second behind defensive tackle Sione Pouha to speak with the press.

Of course, even as Sanchez spoke, several media types with microphones in their hands or video cameras on their shoulders were peering around to see if Tebow was about to make an appearance.

Seems like that's how it's going to be for most everyone when the Jets take the field.

PFT: Hester shocked by cousin's murder charge

    Bounties Vilma FootballAP

As Jonathan Vilma marches into a Louisiana courtroom in the hopes of being able very soon to march onto the field with the rest of the Saints, he will bring with him eight potential witnesses.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Vilma plans to call interim head coach Joe Vitt and current/former teammates Scott Shanle, Jonathan Casillas, Roman Harper, Sedrick Ellis, Troy Evans, and Randall Gay.

We?re told that Darren Sharper also could be a late addition, if he can get to court in time.

Not on the list is Drew Brees, who has submitted an affidavit in support of Vilam?s effort to lift his suspension while the lawsuit challenging the one-year ban proceeds.

Also not on the list but submitting an affidavit is Pierson Prioleau, who played with the Saints from 2009 through 2011 and with three other teams coached by former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.? Prioleau explains that Williams? pre-game rantings ?were exactly the same for every team.?? Prioleau says the players regarded the tough talk as a motivational speech, and that the players ?were always reminded to never hurt the team with illegal or selfish play.?

?I?ve never seen anyone rewarded for any illegal action or for injuring another player,? Prioleau says.

Prioleau?s affidavit doesn?t mention whether Williams used a pay-for-performance system that rewarded players for rendering opponents unable to continue via good, clean, legal hits.

Vilma also plans to introduce more than 20 exhibits, consisting of among other things portions of the league?s investigation file and letters exchanged regarding the suspension and Vilma?s decision not to meet with Commissioner Roger Goodell before or after the suspension was imposed.

Whether Vilma is likely to eventually win the war is one of the factors that Judge Helen G. Berrigan will consider in deciding the outcome of this key battle.? Others include whether he?ll suffer ?irreparable harm? if he?s suspended now and later wins the case, and whether more damage will be done to Vilma with the suspension kept in place or to the NFL with the suspension lifted.? Also, the ?public interest? is a common, but often nebulous, factor in efforts of this nature.

The StarCaps litigation resulted in the a court blocking multiple suspensions until the litigation was resolved.? In that case, the ?irreparable harm? factor drove the outcome.? It could, in this case, be the determining factor, too.

Judge Berrigan could rule on the motion at the hearing, or she could take the matter under advisement and rule later.? Either way, time is of the essence; Vilma can?t participate in any practices or preseason games unless and until the suspension is lifted.

Syrian TV: a tragicomic portrait of a crisis

Watching talk shows and comic soap operas on state television in Syria, one may well wonder whether the country is really in the throes of a deadly crisis.

It took a deadly attack on the regime's crisis cell on July 18, and the spread of violence into several Damascus neighbourhoods over the past 10 days, before the channel finally turned to covering real news.

But even now, its coverage of the conflict that has gripped the country remains at best minimal.

More than 16 months into the outbreak of an anti-regime revolt, the state broadcaster dedicates practically all of its airtime to topics as mundane as the benefits of a vegetarian diet, the country's heritage and aerobics sessions.

Life, according to Syrian TV, is normal.

After the attack that killed four top regime officials -- including President Bashar al-Assad's brother-in-law Assef Shawkat -- the state broadcaster's tone became more sombre.

For the first time, footage showing the bloodied corpses of rebel fighters was aired, as were images of soldiers proud to declare they had "cleansed" neighbourhoods of Damascus from "terrorists, at the behest of residents."

Such footage was broadcast to reassure a public that has long and repeatedly been told that Syria faces a "conspiracy" that "Syria will not give in," and that "terrorists want to sow chaos."

The jingoism has grown even more flagrant in recent days, with television spots showing images of battle-hardened troops in special training. Syria's "brave armed forces" are celebrated with patriotic music and slogans blared across the airwaves.

The story so far according to Syrian state television stands in stark contrast to the version of events put out by pan-Arab satellite channels Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya.

While both are vilified by the Damascus regime for their continuous coverage of the revolt, state television keeps the spotlight firmly on Assad's version of what is happening.

Much of its airtime is devoted to more humdrum topics.

With much of the country ablaze, Syrian viewers wake up to images of a young man who explains "how to develop the biceps and triceps." The trainer stands in a room decorated with a poster that, in English, reads: "Enjoy a healthy life."

Next, it's a talk show and to learn about "the benefits of brown bread," "ostrich farming in Syria," "the revival of oriental music in Sweida" in southern Syria, "an antiques exhibition in Aleppo" in the north, or "cooking in Ramadan."

And now that the holy Muslim month has arrived, Syrian soap operas are the channel's biggest highlight.

-- 'They take us for idiots' --

    --------------------------------

Just days before fighting hit the capital in mid-July, a report in English announced the arrival of "summer in Damascus, so charming thanks to the jacaranda trees."

When fierce fighting erupted in the Midan district of Damascus, the channel sent over a correspondent so viewers could be reassured that "all is well."

Speaking live, the correspondent interviewed several visibly frightened people about a situation he reported as "calm," when suddenly loud explosions and shooting were heard.

The video has now gone viral among anti-regime activists, who often mock state television's portrayal of the Syrian crisis.

Pro-regime channels are the only ones allowed in public spaces in Damascus, but even Assad's supporters are often not convinced by the coverage.

"We certainly support the government and the army, but (pro-regime) channels are definitely not telling the truth," Bassam, a Damascus grocer, told AFP.

Ahmed, a young Syrian refugee who recently arrived in Beirut, does not watch state television either. "I used to watch it before, but I stopped," he told AFP. "They take us for idiots."

A Syrian regime supporter in Beirut admitted that "they exaggerate. They speak neither of the demonstrations nor about the opposition."

Public television and radio have been subject to US and EU sanctions for several months, for being deemed to be instruments of propaganda for the regime.

Razer unveils BlackWidow Ultimate keyboard and Ouroboros ...

Razer has today launched a brand new keyboard and mouse that are sure to get a few gamers excited.

First up we have the 2013 edition of the BlackWidow Ultimate keyboard, which offers up full mechanical keys using blue switches and 10-key roll-over (copes with up to 10 key presses simultaneously). Razer promises key motion faster than any standard keyboard, and detection of every key press regardless of how fast you can repeatedly tap them.

The BlackWidow Ultimate also offers up improved green key backlighting and a matte black finish that is ?anti-fingerprint.? Those of you with additional peripherals will be glad to hear Razer has included both audio and USB passthroughs.

The BlackWidow Ultimate may be perfect for your desk at home, but Razer also wants to cater to those attending LAN parties and tournaments. So they?ve also launched the BlackWidow Tournament Edition, which offers up the same feature set, but removes the numpad for a smaller, lighter keyboard.

Complimenting the BlackWidow is one of the most customizable rodents I have ever seen. It?s called the Razer Ouroboros, and is referred to as an ?elite ambidextrous gaming mouse? with good reason.

The Ouroboros has been designed for any size of hand by letting you adjust its ergonomics. This is done by allowing the length of the mouse to be adjusted, the angle of the arch where you palm rests to be tweaked, and the side panels to be interchanged allowing for three different grip types (claw, palm, or hybrid). And being ambidextrous, it works for both left or right-handed gamers.

The wireless mouse can perform for up to 12 hours using a single rechargeable AA battery, but you will probably never run out of juice if the recharge stand is used between gaming sessions.

Accuracy is assured as the Ouroboros achieves 8200dpi using a dual sensor that consists of both a laser and optical sensor fitted to the base of the unit. There?s also a ?clutch trigger? that allows the DPI to be cut instantly when you need it, and if you prefer to use your mouse wired, Razer promise the same level of accuracy regardless.

Both the new keyboards and mouse take advantage of Razer Synapse 2.0, which allows your game preferences to be stored in the cloud. That means wherever you take your peripherals, as soon as you are hooked up to the web your settings will be available.

The BlackWidow Ultimate 2013 and Ouroboros don?t come cheap. You?ll be expected to pay around $139.99 for the keyboard and $129.99 for the mouse. That?s sure to come down a bit when online retailers get stock, though.

If the price hasn?t put you off then the BlackWidow will be available from August, but you?ll be waiting until the fourth quarter for the Ouroboros to appear.

Ernie Els wins stunning Open when Scott collapses

LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England (AP) ? Ernie Els plucked the ball from the hole after one last birdie and heaved it into the grandstand. At the time, it looked like nothing more than a classy gesture by a former British Open champion ? not the next one.

The name on the claret jug was supposed to be Adam Scott, who had a four-shot lead with four holes to play.

But in a shocking turnaround Sunday, Els returned to the 18th green less than an hour later to claim the oldest trophy in golf. Scott joined a list of players who threw away a major.

That was not lost on Els, whose heart sank when he looked over at the 32-year-old Australian.

"Sorry," Els told him. "You're a great player, a great friend of mine. I feel very fortunate. You're going to win many of these."

Scott might not get another chance like this.

After hitting a 3-wood into a pot bunker on the final hole, Scott had one last chance when he stood over a 7-foot par putt to force a playoff. It stayed left of the cup, and Scott dropped into a crouch. Standing off to the side, his chin quivered as the magnitude of the meltdown hit him. Instead, he mouthed one word: "Wow."

    Wow, indeed.

Even though Els had gone more than two years without winning, and had thrown away two tournaments in recent months with shaky putting, the Big Easy felt all along that something special was going to happen at this British Open.

And it did ? all because of a collapse by Scott that no one saw coming.

"I know I let a really great chance slip through my fingers today," Scott said.

On a wind-swept afternoon at Royal Lytham & St. Annes that blew away the hopes of Tiger Woods and a handful of others, Scott looked steady as ever by going eight straight holes without making bogey. And that's when it came undone.

"I had it in my hands with four to go," Scott said.

A bogey from the bunker on the 15th cut the lead to three. That was followed by a three-putt bogey on the 16th, where his 3-foot par putt spun in and out of the cup and made the gallery gasp. From the middle of the 17th fairway, he hit a 6-iron that turned left, ran down the slope and took one last bounce in shin-high grass.

"I thought, 'Hold on. We've got a problem here,' " said Graeme McDowell, playing with Scott in the final group.

By then, Els had posted a 2-under 68 with a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole, a cheer that Scott recognized while playing the 17th. Scott failed to get up-and-down for par from the rough and suddenly was tied.

Els headed to the practice green, where it rarely works out for him. In perhaps the most crushing defeat in a career filled with them, Els was on the putting green at Augusta National in 2004 when Phil Mickelson made an 18-foot birdie putt to win the Masters.

"I just thought, 'I'll probably be disappointed again,' " Els said. "You're not really hoping the guy is going to make a mistake, but you're hoping you don't have to go a playoff, you can win outright. This one was different, because I feel for Adam."

Els, who started the final round six shots behind, wound up with his second British Open ? the other one was 10 years ago at Muirfield ? and fourth major championship at a stage in his career when it looked as if his best golf was behind him.

"Amazing," Els said. "I'm still numb. It still hasn't set in. It will probably take quite a few days because I haven't been in this position for 10 years, obviously. So it's just crazy, crazy, crazy getting here."

The celebration was muted, unlike his other three majors.

"First of all, I feel for Adam Scott. He's a great friend of mine," Els said. "Obviously, we both wanted to win very badly. But you know, that's the nature of the beast. That's why we're out here. You win. You lose. It was my time for some reason."

The wind finally arrived off the Irish Sea and ushered in pure chaos ? a mental blunder by Woods that led to triple bogey on the sixth hole, a lost ball by Brandt Snedeker that took him out of contention and a topped shot that made McDowell, a former U.S. Open champion, look like an amateur.

"I guess my disappointment kind of seems relatively stupid in relation to the guy ... I've just seen a guy lose The Open Championship," said McDowell, who played in the final group of a major for the second straight time.

Nothing was more stunning than what happened to Scott, who closed with a 75.

"I managed to hit a poor shot on each of the closing four holes," Scott said. "Look, I played so beautifully for most of the week. I shouldn't let this bring me down."

Even so, it added another chapter to Australian heartbreak, most of that belonging to his idol, Greg Norman.

Scott was the fourth Australian since the 2007 Masters to lead going into the final round of a major, yet the proud land Down Under remains without a major since Geoff Ogilvy won the U.S. Open at Winged Foot in 2006.

"Greg was my hero when I was a kid, and I thought he was a great role model, how he handled himself in victory and defeat," Scott said. "He set a good example for us. It's tough. I can't justify anything that I've done out there. I didn't finish the tournament well today.

"But next time ... I'm sure there will be a next time and I can do a better job of it."

Already in the World Golf Hall of Fame, the 42-year-old Els joined even more elite company. He became only the sixth player to win the U.S. Open and British Open twice. The others are Jack Nicklaus, Woods, Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones and Lee Trevino.

Woods came undone on the sixth hole when he tried to blast out of a bunker from a plugged lie, stayed in the bunker, and three-putted for triple bogey. Still with an outside chance after a birdie on the 12th, he stuck with his conservative plan of hitting iron off the tee and made three straight bogeys. He closed with a 73 to tie for third with Brandt Snedeker, who also had his share of problems for a 74.

Woods had his best finish in a major since he lost to Y.E. Yang in the 2009 PGA Championship, though he remains winless in the last 17.

"It's part of golf," said Woods, who moves to No. 2 in the world. "We all go through these phases. Some people, it lasts entire careers. Others are a little bit shorter. Even the greatest players to ever play have all gone through little stretches like this."

Els finished at 7-under 273. He failed to qualify for the Masters this year for the first time in nearly two decades, but that won't be a problem now. His win gives him a five-year exemption into the majors.

It was the most shocking collapse at the British Open since Jean Van de Velde took a triple bogey on the final hole at Carnoustie and lost in a playoff. But this was different. It wasn't a last-minute blowup, more of a slow bleed, similar to Jason Dufner losing a five-shot lead to Keegan Bradley in the PGA Championship last year, or Ed Sneed making bogey on the last three holes at the 1979 Masters.

There was just enough wind to make the 206 bunkers at Royal Lytham look a little bit bigger. And as the gusts increased, a calm week turned chaotic.

It started with Woods on the sixth hole, his first triple bogey at a major championship since he lost his ball on the opening hole at Royal St. George's in 2003.

"One yard," he said to his caddie, a measure of the miss. It plugged near the steep wall of a pot bunker.

Instead of chipping to the middle of the bunker, Woods tried to get out with a ferocious swing. The ball smacked into the wall, nearly hit him and wound up near the left wall. He sat on the grass, his left knee (which has gone through four surgeries) flexed underneath him, his right leg extended as he dipped his upper body toward the sand to make a swing. This one also hit the ball, and caromed around and out to the right. From there, he three-putted for a 7.

"The game plan was to fire it into the bank, have it ricochet to the right and then have an angle to come back at it," Woods said. "Unfortunately, it ricocheted to the left and almost hit me."

Just like that, he was seven shots behind. It was the second time this year that one of golf's biggest stars made triple bogey in the final round of a major while in contention. Phil Mickelson made his on the fourth hole at the Masters and never recovered.

Els made a bogey on the ninth to fall six shots behind. All that did was fire him up, and he came home in 32. His 68 is best measured in these terms ? of the last 12 players who teed off in the final round, no one else had better than a 72.

Yet there was one more collapse, in the final hour, and it was the one everyone will remember from this British Open. It's one Scott will somehow need to forget. As winner and runner-up met in a portable trailer before going out to the trophy presentation, Els told him: "Don't beat yourself up."
