Activists: Dozens killed in Syria shelling

(AP) ? Syrian troops rained tank and artillery shells down on a rebellious suburb of the Syrian capital of Damascus Friday, killing dozens of people during a particularly bloody week across the country, opposition groups and activists said.

It's difficult to get an accurate death toll in tightly controlled Syria, where journalists and human rights groups are either banned or severely restricted. But two opposition groups that compile and document casualties reported the death of more than 125 civilians in fighting across the country on Thursday alone.

Death tolls often take several days to compile because of the restrictions and chaos in the country.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Thursday's toll included more than 60 soldiers. If confirmed, it would be one of the highest death tolls on a single day since the start of the uprising against President Bashar Assad in March 2011.

Activists said at least 43 people were killed in over two days of shelling in the sprawling Damascus suburb of Douma that has been a hotbed of dissent against Assad's regime. The dead included three children and five members of a single family.

The barrage is part of a fierce government offensive aimed at regaining control of parts of Damascus suburbs where rebels operate, particularly Douma.

A local activist who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons said the shelling was "relentless" throughout Thursday, and exploding shells killed people in their homes.

"They (government troops) are trying to bring Douma under control, but they are being met by fierce resistance," said Rami Abdul-Rahman, the group's director. He said most of the dead were civilians.

The Local Coordination Committees network said 59 people were killed in Thursday's shelling of Damascus suburbs, most of them in Douma. The difference in tolls could not be reconciled.

The state-run news agency SANA said troops continue to pursue "terrorist groups" in Douma, raiding their hideouts and destroying their communications and other equipment. Clashes resulted in the death of dozens of terrorists ? the official term authorities use for rebels ? and the wounding and arrest of many others, the statement said.

Amateur videos posted by activists online showed bloodied bodies lying on blankets in a room and others shrouded in white sheets and placed on stretchers. "A new massacre by Bashar Assad," cried a man holding a dead girl in a pink blouse, a large gash on her face.

The violence around the capital's suburbs mirrored fighting across many parts of Syria that killed dozens of other people Thursday, according to the groups.

Activists say more than 14,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in March 2011.

A bomb blast rocked central Damascus on Thursday near a busy market and the country's main justice complex, wounding at least three people and sending a cloud of black smoke into the air.

The latest carnage came as world powers show new urgency to resolve the crisis, which so far has resisted international efforts.

World powers will meet Saturday in Geneva for talks on Syria, but few observers expect a breakthrough. Syria has the protection of Russia, a veto-wielding member of the U.N. Security Council, and has so far been impervious to international pressure.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow will not endorse a call on Assad to give up power.

"We are not supporting and will not support any external meddling," he said. "External players must not dictate ... to Syrians, but, first of all, must commit to influencing all the sides in Syria to stop the violence."

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Thursday it was "very clear" that all the participants at the Geneva meeting ? including Russia ? are on board with a transition plan created by international envoy Kofi Annan. His plan calls for the formation of a national unity government that would oversee the drafting of a new constitution and elections.

Clinton told reporters that the invitations to Saturday's meeting in Geneva made clear that representatives "were coming on the basis of (Annan's) transition plan."

Lavrov said it was "obvious that a transitional period is needed to overcome the Syrian crisis," but insisted the major powers in Geneva must focus on convincing the opposition groups to soften their demands.

Diplomatic hopes have rested on Russia to agree to a plan that would end the Assad family dynasty, which has ruled Syria for more than four decades. Russia is Syria's most important ally, protector and supplier of arms.

There are few options besides keeping up diplomatic pressure, as an international military intervention is all but ruled out in the near future. Few countries are willing to get deeply involved in such an explosive conflict, and Russia and China have pledged to veto any international attempt to intervene militarily.

Blueberry Smash Cocktail with Blueberries and St. Germain liqueur ...

I spied this cocktail while thumbing through a recent issue of Bon Appetit magazine and it sounded perfect for summer with berries, citrus and St. Germain (San-Jer-Man), an all-natural elderflower liqueur produced in France. If you have not tried St. Germain, it?s a lovely liqueur (and that includes the bottle; it is gorgeous) that is made from processing fresh, handpicked blossoms of the elderflower found in the Alps. It has a wonderful floral nose with hits of pear, peach and grapefruit zest so it?s a great pairing with many fruits, champagne and in this case, vodka.

As often happens I knew when I saw the recipe I would love to make it but I had none of the ingredients available save for the liqueur so I anticipated it would happen at a later date. You know what happens with those don?t you? Too often they never happen; an article or idea will get filed away to only be forgotten.

Why was this cocktail so lucky? Call it providence that I received my bi-weekly box of produce from Door to Door Organics just a few days after reading the article. Even though I have the option to tailor what I get in my delivery; without fail I forget what I?ve ordered and it?s always a surprise when I open my box. It?s like a gift to myself each and every two weeks! This week included beets, watermelon, nectarines, blueberries, lemons and limes?it was meant to be don?t you think?

Not unlike a mojito, it requires a bit of smashing. If you don?t have a muddler then just use the end of a wooden spoon; the more flavor you can extract from the fruits the better. This cocktail was everything I had hoped for. It is simply summer. Berries, citrus and vodka combine with the St. Germain and create a cocktail that is perfectly balanced with a definite citrus edge. Not overly sweet, it?s just right!

Blueberry Smash

Perfect in the heat of summer; this cocktail is filled with fruit but is not an overly sweet cocktail; just overly good!

Ingredients

  • 2 lemons, sliced into rounds
  • 2 limes, sliced into rounds
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries
  • 1/2 cup (loosely packed) fresh mint leaves plus sprigs for garnish
  • 1 1/2 cups vodka
  • 3/4 cup St-Germain (elderflower liqueur)

Preparation

  1. Using a muddler or the handle of a wooden spoon, coarsely mash lemon and lime slices, blueberries, and mint leaves in a large pitcher. Stir in vodka, St-Germain, and 2 cups of ice cubes.
  2. Divide drink among coupe or highball glasses; top with more ice cubes. Garnish each drink with a mint sprig.

Beware of the Gas Price Sales Spike: Economy Car Demand ...

It?s hard to pick up a newspaper or a magazine or visit an automotive web site and not see media coverage about fuel-efficient vehicles. Economy cars, hybrids and electric vehicles represent an important part of future vehicle design, and rightfully so. Improving gas mileage and reducing dependence on foreign oil are worthy goals.

However, an abundance of media coverage about these vehicles might be leading to a skewed view of consumer demand in these categories. For automotive retailers, it is important to understand true consumer demand for economy cars, electric vehicles, hybrids, pickup trucks and SUVs and to floorplan accordingly.

To better understand consumer demand in these categories, Experian Automotive examined the fluctuations in market share for economy cars and pickup trucks relative to fluctuations in gas prices. As one would expect, a sudden spike in fuel prices tends to drive up demand for economy cars and lower demand for pickup trucks. However, even when gas prices retreat by only a few cents per gallon, demand for economy cars drops sharply and pickup trucks see a sudden burst in market share.

In Q1 2008, gas cost an average of $3.11 per gallon. The small car/economy market share was approximately 11.2%, while full-size pickup truck share was 11.6%. When gas prices soared to $3.76 per gallon in Q2 2008, small car/economy market share jumped to 15.2%. At the same time, full-size pickup truck share plummeted to 9.3%.

As soon as the rate of acceleration in gas prices eased, however, pickup trucks soared back and economy cars dropped off quickly. With gas at $3.85 a gallon in Q3 2008, full-size pickup truck market share had jumped up to 12.6%, while small car/economy market share slid back to 11.6%.

In the gas price spike of 2011, a gallon of gas shot up from nearly $3.22 per gallon in Q1 2011 to $3.79 in Q2 2011. During this steep run-up, the small car/economy segment and full-size pickup truck segment market share were relatively flat. Small car/economy went from 12.3% to 12.6%, while full-size pickup truck share fell from 10% to 9.8%.

As soon as gas prices receded to $3.64 per gallon in Q3 2011, pickup trucks shot back up to 11.6%, while economy cars dropped to 10.5%. So, despite fuel prices still being 42 cents per gallon higher than just two quarters earlier, demand for economy cars and full-size pickup trucks was relatively unchanged.

Unchanged demand wasn?t limited to full-size pickup trucks, either. In Q4 2011, with fuel prices at $3.47 per gallon, the SUV/large segment was at 2.5% ? the same market share as when fuel prices were $3.11 in Q1 2008.

It appears that consumers? tolerance for gas prices is not a fixed number, but rather an elastic number that stretches as people get used to paying higher prices. Anytime there is a significant spike in gas prices, consumers hit the panic button and make a run on economy cars. As soon as this spike begins to recede, consumers fall back into more traditional buying patterns.

What are the implications for automotive retailers? First, don?t believe every headline you read. Journalists are always looking for stories that are unique and interesting, and the sudden run-up in economy car demand is a phenomenon that certainly fit this description. Of course, economy cars represent an important segment as automakers work to reach future fuel economy standards.? However, a high share of headlines does not necessarily equate to long-term shifts in consumer demand. Full-size pickup trucks have showed remarkable staying power, even as gas inches higher over time.

Second, beware of the sudden spike in demand. The initial run on high-mileage economy cars is often a knee-jerk reaction to a sudden spike in fuel prices. Rationality quickly returns to the market, and consumers return to more traditional buying patterns ? even after just a slight drop in fuel prices.

The bottom line for dealers is to always monitor the pulse of consumer demand. This is best achieved by a rational review of sales registration data and an understanding of the unique sales patterns and demographics of their local market. Reliance on a gut feeling or media reports can lead dealers to a lot full of high-mileage vehicles that simply aren?t what their customers want.

(AP) ? Adele is celebrating another milestone ? a pregnancy.

The superstar singer's representative confirmed Friday that the 24-year-old is expecting a child with boyfriend Simon Konecki. The message was posted on her official website, which crashed due to a large amount of traffic after the news was announced.

"I'm delighted to announce that Simon and I are expecting our first child together. I wanted you to hear the news direct from me, obviously we're over the moon and very excited but please respect our privacy at this precious time," she said on the website.

It's unclear how far along the British singer is.

Adele won six Grammys earlier this year for her best-selling "21" album. Though that disc was based on heartbreak, she has since found love with Konecki.

A new look at Charlize Theron's shaved head

By Us Weekly

Charlize Theron has ditched the hat! The "Snow White and the Huntsman" actress proudly debuted her completely shaved head while carrying her baby boy Jackson in Namibia on Sunday. Theron, 36, buzzed off her long blonde locks for her role as Furiosa in "Mad Max: Fury Road," the fourth film in the 1979 action franchise.

The South African star and her adorable 6-month-old even wore matching outfits -- Theron and Jackson both wore red shirts as she carried him.

Theron first agreed to star in "Mad Max: Fury Road" opposite Tom Hardy in 2009, but a series of production setbacks delayed filming. "It's been three years: It's time to skin this cat already!" Theron told Us Weekly while promoting Prometheus in London May 30. "I'm very excited about it."
